Overview

There is a common misconception that there isn’t any suitable family adventure trip in Nepal. Because for most adventure enthusiasts, Nepal redirects to Everest Base Camp Trek. Debunking the myth, we’ve included the best packages suitable for families looking for a modest adventure.

Our Family Adventure Trip – Poon Hill Trek with Seti river rafting and Chitwan Jungle Safari is perfect for all ages. The trip begins with a visit to the historic and UNESCO world heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu, the former kingdom of the Newar people, is rich in heritage and is a hotpot of cultural diversity.

After a short flight to Pokhara, the touristic lake city west of Kathmandu, we visit some key places of interest. The next day we wake up to a spectacular view of the Himalayan range from the viewpoint of Sarangkot.

After 2 days in Pokhara, we start the Poon Hill trek by driving to Kimche and then trek to Ghandruk. The trek offers one of the best views of the fluted peak of Machhapuchhre (6,993m) along with Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna (8,091m). Accommodation is comfortable in family-run trekkers’ lodges, mostly run by the Gurung people, natives of the region.

The highlight of the trek is the sunrise over the horizon at the vantage point of Poon Hill. But the trail is beautiful with picturesque villages, dense rhododendron forests full of birds and deep sub-tropical valleys. The trek is easy to moderate with some steep ascents and descents.

Family Adventure Trip in Nepal is perfect for active families with pre-teen children or senior citizens who love the outdoors.

After the trek, we embark on a 2-day fun-filled rafting adventure on the Seti Khola river – with an added bonus of camping on the beach on the first day and then indulging in the luxurious resort in Chitwan. The Chitwan jungle safari experience is thrilling yet enlightening with a cascade of activities like the cultural dance program of the native Tharu people, bird watching tour, boating in the river, elephant breeding center informational tour, jeep safari, etc.

Keep Walking offers the best Nepal Family Adventure Trip in Nepal. The trip is a complete package offering insights into Nepal’s cultural, natural and harmonic beauty.

We start a little early to beat the rush hour traffic and drive to Boudha, one of the UNESCO world heritage site and a pilgrimage stop for Buddhists.

Boudhanath Stupa is surrounded by eateries, shops selling all kind of goods and monasteries housing monks and students studying Buddhism. There are usually devout pilgrims circumambulating the main stupa while some do so by laying flat on the ground.

Apart from this, we will also visit Schechen Gumba, a nearby monastery school. You can relax and soak all the unique yet mystifying ways of the people and even enjoy lunch in one of the rooftop eateries surrounding the Boudhanath Stupa.

We then drive to Pashupatinath, another UNESCO site and one of the holiest pilgrimage stop for Hindus all over the world. Only Hindus are allowed in the main temple complex while foreigners are permitted to visit the temples outside and even view the cremation ritual, which unlike in the west is publicly performed.

After driving back to the hotel, you can retreat or explore at your own convenience (Swayambhu is best to explore in the evening).

The first day of the trek is comparatively easy as Kimche lies about 53 km (1.5 hrs) drive away from Pokhara and Ghandruk is just 200m (1 hr uphill hike) from Kimche. The drive to Kimche along the Modi Khola offers scenic views of terraced plantations, stone houses and roaring hills.

Ghandruk is one of the biggest Gurung village. The villagers are mostly Buddhist and still practice Shamanism and nature.  Gurungs were mostly farmers and shepherds, but many are now enrolled in the British Gurkha Regiment. The village offers beautiful mountain views and has a Gurung Museum – detailing life and way of the local people, a monastery and a temple.

The quaint village of Tadapani on a ridge and offers beautiful views of the Annapurna Massif, Lamjung Himal and Machhapuchre and is frequented by trekkers journeying to the Annapurna Base Camp and Khopra Ridge.

After breakfast, we hike through a pretty mixed subtropical forest of rhododendron, magnolia and pine. The forest is also home to common langur (Entelle monkeys). The trail is well defined, and stone steps make the steep climb easy. In clear weather, Annapurna is visible throughout the trail.

After breakfast, we start descending down the forest to a river crossing across a wooden bridge. Descending further, we reach the village of Banthahti from where the trail gradually ascends through a dense forest to Deurali viewpoint. After Deurali, we hike further north to Thinga Thapla viewpoint, a.k.a Gurung Hill, (3,165m), the highest point of the day. This is actually the best view as the snowcapped Annapurna range appears closer than from Poon Hill.

After a quick descent, we arrive at the village of Ghorepani.
